Miracle Buzzard
City Wildlife Care takes many calls every day to rescue wildlife, but one afternoon a call came in from a lorry depot in Magor.
A driver had come in to the depot and said he had hit a large bird on the motorway shortly before he got to the depot and was quite upset about it. One of his work colleagues checked the front of the lorry for damage only to find a buzzard jammed tight behind the front grill of the truck and still alive.
The lorry fitters at the depot said they could remove the grill to get to the bird but this would mean that the lorry would be off the road for hours which creates a problem in itself so after a search on the internet they came up with City Wildlife Care’s phone number.
Within twenty minutes of the call two wildllife rescue officers were on the scene and in only a few minutes the buzzard was released. She was tucked in nice and tight on her side so the rescue officers just pulled open one of her wings which made her small enough to just slide her up behind the grill and out of the top. It is an absolute miracle that she came through this alive and with no injuries.
The buzzard could have been released immediately but it is always best to have a vet check them over first said City Wildlife Care. Wildlife involved in accidents may still have injuries that are not visible, but this time it was a clean bill of health at Summerhill Vets. The buzzard was released none the worse for her ordeal two days later after a nice big meal and a well earned rest.
