If you would like assistance helping your pet cope with Bonfire Night try following these tips or please telephone one of our Veterinary Nurses for advice:
- Create a den so that your pet can hide away quietly when the fireworks start. Leave him and don't try to coax him out. He will feel safer hidden in a quiet corner. If you try to comfort your dog you are condoning his fear and reassuring him that there IS something to be afraid of.
- If you know fireworks will be let off then walk your dog earlier in the day and when you return home close the curtains, shut the windows and turn up the TV or radio. If you own a cat, close the cat flap and keep them indoors.
- If you hear fireworks going off carry on behaving normally, if you jump when they go bang then your pet will become fearful.
- If your pet does not hide away why not play some games and interact with him to keep him occupied and his mind off the strange noises outside.
- If you have a major display near your home why not try to find a relative or friend in a quiet area and organise in advance to take your pet there for the evening.
A little careful planning can make Bonfire Night less traumatic but if your pet is seriously anxious and you know there will be a problem then consult one of our vets or nurses in advance by telephoning 01633 255394. There are plenty of products on the market to help your pet stay calm and relaxed throughout the whole of the evening.
