Skint Strays treats tiny Orphan Hedgehogs
Our veterinary team set up the Skint Strays Fund some years ago to treat injured animals with no owner and tiny orphaned babies just like these....
The day started with a call from City Wildlife Care who had been handed a litter of two week old orphaned baby hedgehogs. Needing round the clock feeding it was decided that the first few weeks of their lives needed the tender care of Summerhill's nurses.
City Wildlife Care will rehabilitate the hedgehogs once they are big enough and strong enough to start learning to fend for themselves.
A feeding rota was set up but the hedgehogs let you know when they are hungry now! Our nurses are aware that as little handling as possible is the best way to raise wildlife for a successful reintroduction later into the wild. However sometimes putting out the food a passing baby just can't resist a nip - and yes, their teeth are sharp!
All the babies are thriving and very active now, at three weeks old they are busy little creatures. However they will soon be returning to City Wildlife Care to start the process of getting them ready for their life in the big outside world.
If you have a garden or field suitable for the release of wildlife then please contact our nurses on 01633 255394 or City Wildlife Care who will be pleased to help.
Visit City Wildlife Care's website and contact them if you can help, or if you are aware of wildlife in need.
Come along to our Open Day on 4th July between 12.00 and 4.00 - bring your dog and enter the fun dog show, practice tours, animal charities, competitions, stalls and lots lots more. The Open Day is our big fundraising event of the year to help animals like these tiny babies.
