A few flea facts

  • The most common flea is the cat flea (Ctenocephalides felis).
  • Most flea bites are rarely felt, it is the reaction to the fleas saliva that causes discomfort.
  • If your pet is allergic to flea saliva, one or two flea bites can cause a severe reaction.
  • Bubonic plague is transmitted by fleas.
  • Fleas carry the tapeworm dipylidium caninum.
  • Dipylidium caninum can infect humans.
  • Fleas can jump upto 7 inches vertically and 13 inches horizontally.
  • The equivalent jump for a human would be 250 feet vertically and 450 feet horizontally.
  • The flea life cycle varies between 2 weeks and 7-8 months
  • Fleas very rarely move from one animal to another. They prefer to spend their entire life on one host.
  • Newly hatched fleas can start laying eggs in 24-36 hours.
  • Female fleas usually outnumber male fleas 2:1
  • Adult fleas die within 12 days if they haven’t fed.
  • Fleas can carry diseases that affect your pets such as Myxomatosis, Yersinia Pestis, Rickettsia, Bartonella, Haempoplasma and potentially feline leukaemia virus infections.
