The saying is there for a reason. If you have ever seen a kitten with feline enteritis, a dog with parvo or distemper or experienced the suffering a rabbit goes through with myxomatosis, then you’ll understand the importance of vaccinating your pet and keeping those vaccinations up to date - by a simple booster injection every year.  These diseases can be so devastating, yet they are so easily prevented.

The low incidence of life-threatening illnesses in the UK is mainly because pet owners have their pets routinely vaccinated.  In dogs, vaccination provides protection against diseases such as distemper, hepatitis, parvovirus and leptospirosis.  Every time an unvaccinated dog leaves home it is at risk of contracting one of these serious and potentially fatal illnesses. 

Vaccination is the only successful method of protecting dogs, without vaccination pets could potentially suffer serious and possibly fatal illnesses.  In some cases these diseases can be contracted by humans and cause serious illness.

 

It is important once a vaccination course has been completed to ensure that your pet receives booster vaccinations regularly to keep its immunity up to date.

If your dog is going into kennels, you may want to vaccinate against Kennel Cough (Infectious Bronchitis to give it its correct name) and if you want to travel to the continent, then consult your vet about rabies vaccines and pet passports well in advance.

Rabbits are rapidly gaining in popularity as pets throughout the U.K. and are currently the third most popular pet. Rabbits, just like cats and dogs can also be vaccinated.

There are currently TWO vaccines for rabbits - Myxomatosis and Viral Haemorrhagic Disease (VHD). Myxomatosis can be given every 12 months, however in high risk areas, such as Newport and Cardiff, this vaccine is given every 6months for extra protection. VHD is given every 12 months.

Vaccinations and Health Check

Summerhill Vets recommend annual vaccinations. When you bring your pet along to the surgery we will carry out a complementary health check.  We believe it is so important to check your pet to ensure that any minor ailments do not become major illnesses.

Your pet cannot tell you if it is poorly or in pain.  A routine check-up, including a dental check, may be all that is required but when you leave the surgery you can rest assured that you pet is going home fit, healthy and happy.

Nipping small problems in the bud can prevent your pet being in pain and save you money in the long run.
