Summerhill Team Scale the 3 Peaks for Charity!!
On the 23rd of September a number of past and present members of the Summerhill team travelled up to Scotland, to attempt the National Three Peaks Challenge: i.e. climbing the highest peaks in Scotland - Ben Nevis, England - Scafell Pike and Wales - Snowdon, all within 24hours!! Madness!!
The group from the Summerhill surgery, vets Jamie Allen and Leyla Turan and head receptionist Fiona Burge, were joined by familiar faces Sophie Jenkins (now of Valley Vets) and Hannah Holmes ( ..?) although regrettably Zoe Matthews was unable to make it on the day - despite being the key organiser of early morning training trips to Sugar Loaf and Pen y Fan.
The team met their guide in Fort William the night before the challenge for the briefing, before a terrible night's sleep, dreaming of blisters and broken ankles...
They set off towards Ben Nevis just after 8am Saturday morning and didn't look back, until a whole 27 hours later, having completed Ben Nevis in 6 hours, Scafell in complete darkness (head torches don't count!) - starting at 10pm and not getting off the mountainside until 3am, and finally Snowdon, where every step felt like mental and physical torture!! The team, having had no sleep, travelled a total of 475 miles and walked 26 miles in ascent and descent!!!
The sleep deprived team, who's legs had all seized up on the bus trip back from Snowdon and who are ONLY just starting to walk normally again (but still not downhill!) would like to say a HUGE THANKYOU to all those who sponsored them, friends, family and clients of the practice in particular, have been extremely generous and helped to raise a total of £1245.00, all of which will go directly to the Worldwide Veterinary Service, an organisation which supports animal welfare charities across the world, with volunteer teams, veterinary drugs, equipment and advice.
